I came to photography through time spent trying to capture moments and not let them go — almost pre-empting nostalgia — rather than through photography itself. Years spent hiking, climbing, skiing and working outdoors shaped the way I began to photograph these environments, moving from landscapes toward the people who move through them and the equipment that enables them to do so

My work focuses on that relationship between people, equipment, weather, exposure and movement. I want photographs to convey something of what it actually felt like to be there, rather than simply recording a summit or a perfect campsite. I’m drawn to the hardship, grit, uncertainty and passion that exist within these environments, and above all to the human experience of moving through places far larger than ourselves.
